From the Valley of Kashmir to the Vision of the World: The Journey of Cosmopolitan Artist Mohd Syeed Teeli and the Tagore International Award 2026

In the journey of every artist, certain moments become more than achievements; they become reflections of a deeper dialogue between the individual, society, and the ideals that shape one’s creative path. The conferral of the Tagore International Award 2026 upon Mohd Syeed Teeli in the category of Cosmopolitan Artist from the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, India represents one such significant moment.

Presented by the Art Cultural & Social Awards Council in association with the Veyil Foundation, this honour recognizes his dedication to visual arts, creative education, and the promotion of cultural dialogue through artistic practice.

For Syeed, this recognition carries a profound emotional and intellectual significance. Having completed his Master of Fine Arts from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, the institution founded by Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the award creates a symbolic connection between his contemporary artistic journey and Tagore’s enduring vision of universal humanism, creativity, and the unity of humanity beyond artificial boundaries.

Born and educated in the cultural landscape of Kashmir, Syeed’s artistic journey has been shaped by the meeting point of local experiences and global imagination. A Gold Medalist in Bachelor of Visual Arts from Kashmir University, he further expanded his interdisciplinary understanding through a Master of Political Science from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and his Master of Fine Arts from Visva-Bharati.

His philosophy of the Cosmopolitan Artist does not view art merely as an object of aesthetic appreciation but as a universal language capable of connecting individuals, cultures, histories, and civilizations. Through his paintings, writings, educational initiatives, and the vision of World Through Art (WTA), he advocates for peace, intercultural understanding, global citizenship, and a more compassionate human future.

Alongside his independent artistic practice, Syeed serves as an art educator at AA Academy, where he encourages young minds to discover creativity through drawing, painting, imagination, and visual expression. For him, education is not only the transfer of skills but the cultivation of sensitivity, confidence, and the ability to perceive the world with curiosity and empathy.

Reflecting on the honour, Mohd Syeed Teeli stated:

“Receiving the Tagore International Award 2026 is a deeply meaningful milestone in my artistic journey. As a student of Visva-Bharati, founded by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, this recognition holds a special connection to his philosophy of universal humanism and creativity. I dedicate this honour to my teachers, students, family, friends, and everyone who believes in the transformative power of art.”

The award stands not as the conclusion of a journey but as another chapter in a continuing exploration of art’s responsibility toward humanity. In a world often divided by borders, ideologies, and identities, the vision of cosmopolitan art seeks to remind us that creativity remains one of humanity’s oldest and most powerful languages of connection.

From the valleys of Kashmir to the global conversation of contemporary art, the journey continues—guided by imagination, education, and the belief that art can help humanity see itself as one shared world.
